What is Holistic Psychology?

Holistic psychology will assist you, by looking at the whole person.

Your "whole person" consists of mind and brain, body and physiology, spirit and energetic patterns. Mind, body and spirit -- in short.

Unless the body mind spirit connection is in alignment, or working together in an interactive sense, one will not be living to potential -- living but not thriving.

One can survive, or thrive. You can be excited about your life, or simply exist.

Holistic psychology utilizes the model of Integrative Health. Holistic psychology and integrative health are not dismissive of other specialists, rather -- they are inclusive. Holistic psychology may work with other specialties in a teamwork approach. Other specialists may include M.D.s, registered dieticians, nurses, energy workers, licensed mental health counselors, pastoral counselors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, herbalists and others.

Holistic psychology will focus on the following:

  1. Holistic renewal and the process of self-discovery to reveal one's authentic self. One may have the persona of (for example) wife, teacher, nurse or other outward roles, but the authentic self is more than a role. One is a unique being, with strengths and vulnerabilities. One is more than a role, or a title or a persona. One is a persona that may contain sub-personalities, AND the authentic being. Sometimes the authentic self is revealed more fully in the second half of life (midlife and beyond).
  2. Holistic psychology will be concerned with the mind, feelings and cognitions -- allowing emotions, feelings, states and traits to be connected with other parts of your being. One's being includes spirit, social connectedness, physical environment, and cultural background.
  3. In the Ken Wilber model of Integral psychology, the big picture indicates that a person is more than simply "I". There are four quadrants of human development:
    "I" : Intentional -- the self and consciousness (subjective)
    "IT" : Behavioral -- the brain and organism (objective)
    "WE" : Cultural -- the culture and worldview that we possess (intersubjective)
    "ITS" : Social -- Social systems and environment (interobjective)

The Key to holistic health:

The sum is always greater than the parts. When you are integrated, you are whole and will display your authentic self. Authenticity = unlimited potential and being at ease with who you are, as a unique being. When you are walking in your own shoes, you will thrive. Negative patterns will fall away. Connect with all four dimensions or quadrants. This is your own personal blueprint for life. If you are asking "who am I really?", check in with your whole being -- the "I", the "IT", the "WE", the "ITS". Don't compare your self to others, but view your own personal blueprint for what it is. Then one can adjust as necessary, after one is fully informed.

Self-defeating behaviors, thoughts and actions, versus Connectedness:

  • Are you living up to your potential? Or are you staying safe?
  • Are you being true to self? Or are you attempting to meet the expectations of others?
  • Are you walking in your own shoes and living authentically?
  • Are you allowing the old ways to fall or drop away, when they cease to be effective?
  • Are you allowing a shedding of the old skin to occur, to reveal the next layer?
  • Are you allowing an "unfolding" to occur as you evolve and grow?
  • Are you letting the process of life reveal itself, or are you stuck?
  • Are you letting blocks to your growth hold you back? Are you living a fear-based life?

Fear-based thoughts will cause fear-based actions, and lead to stuck points or stagnation.

Love-based thoughts and actions will cause powerful surges in energy and life-enhancing growth. We start by knowing ourselves authentically, this leads to loving and honoring the self, which results in a powerful connection to spirit and unlimited potential.

What is the relationship you have to yourself? Do you trust and honor yourself?

What is the relationship you have to your thoughts, feelings and mind? Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Are you closed, or willing to be open?

What is the relationship you have to your culture and heritage? Is there pride, passion and wisdom that you might seek, in your personal lineage and culture; or have you dismissed your link with the past and your personal genealogy?

What is the relationship you have with your social system and the environment? Do you enjoy your physical surroundings and your environment? Have you created lovely and nurturing spaces and places for yourself? Have you been a friend, do you have friends? Are you connected or do you feel as if you are walking alone? What is your relationship with nature? What is the relationship you have to the food you eat? What is the relationship that you have with all things that you eat, drink, taste, smell, feel, see and hear?

Are you being nourished? Are you existing, or living or thriving?

Intend on more! Intention puts into play a whole series of serendipitous events!

What is your relationship and connectivity to your own personal spirituality or to God? Do you feel a sense of unity and connectedness, or are you using self will to propel you?

Commonalities of various psychologies
with Holistic Psychology:

One's life is art and science -- A unique picture painted by you and by spirit in unity....

  • Gestalt -- States that the mind has innate organizational abilities, which allows us to see the whole, yet one may de-construct its parts. (The larger picture is seen, before the component parts);
  • Transpersonal -- States that humans are able to transcend the personal in a unity with spirit. (There is a larger picture);
  • Humanistic -- States that there is an unfolding process to full human potential .... when we are ready. (The larger picture makes itself clear);
  • Holistic -- The "whole" is integrated into one's being. (The big picture becomes the mural of one's life).

You may begin to co-create the picture of your life
right now, with holistic psychology.
