What Is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy medicine used in the promotion of relaxation, harmony, well-being and renewed health, on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. This healing technique was developed in Japan and is administered by placing the hands lightly on the fully clothed client. Why do we need Reiki?Health is not simply the absence of disease or pain: it is a state of balance and harmony between the body and mind of a person. The majority of people are not in full health, but are carrying an accumulation of the effects of different traumatic physical and emotional events that have happened to them during their life. The body may have initially been able to absorb the effects of accidents, infections or emotional stress, but gradually finds it increasingly difficult to cope with their accumulation, and symptoms begin to show. Reiki treatments aim not only at relieving such symptoms, but also addressing the root cause of any condition present and restoring the body back to full health. What Happens in a Treatment?Reiki is a subtle and very gentle healing energy conveyed through the therapist to the client. The energy re-vitalizes the client to enable their own natural resources deal with illness or injury in the best possible way. By directing and focusing Reiki, the therapist seeks to supplement the depleted energy of the recipient, dealing with stress and tension at whatever level it exists and releasing the body's own recuperative abilities to deal with the problem in the most effective way for that individual. Clients receiving Reiki tend to experience sensations of deep relaxation, and of warmth or even heat, indicating that the energy is releasing accumulated blockages and detoxifying the body. Reiki TherapistsReiki therapists work in their own and clients' homes, in the workplace, in doctors' surgeries, in hospitals, in hospices, in healing and natural health centres, in nursing and retirement homes, in community centres. Reiki Practice and EffectReiki can be given to clients of all ages for any illness, stress or injury, as a therapy which is completely natural, has no side effects and is complementary to any other therapy, allopathic or holistic. It can be helpful in a wide range of physical and psychological conditions, sometimes to a remarkable degree: indeed the medically diagnosed nature of the illness appears to have no relevance to the outcome of Reiki therapy, and case histories range from the trivial to the acutely serious in which Reiki has made an important, perhaps even overriding, contribution to recovery. Sometimes one Reiki treatment is sufficient, but often several are needed and the benefits emerge gradually. Reiki often helps with the speed and extent of recovery from major surgery and from the effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In cases of terminal illness Reiki brings a sense of peace and deep comfort to the patient. Reiki can do no harm. The Science Behind ReikiDuring Reiki treatments not only do the brain wave patterns of therapist and receiver become synchronized in the alpha state, characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation, but they pulse in unison with the earth's magnetic field, known as the Schumann Resonance. During these moments, the biomagnetic field of the therapist's hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current. The linking of energy fields between therapist and earth allows the therapist to draw on the 'infinite energy source' or 'universal energy field' via the Schumann Resonance. The quantum physics view of a 'living universe' in which everything is connected in a 'living web of interdependence' supports the subjective experience of 'oneness' and 'expanded consciousness' related by those who regularly receive Reiki. There is a large pulsating biomagnetic field that is emitted from the hands of Reiki therapists whilst they work. It has been discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, and sweep up and down from 0.3 - 30 Hz, focusing mostly in 7 - 8 Hz, theta state. Medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7 Hz bone growth, 10 Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation. Physiotherapy equipment based on these principles has been designed to aid soft tissue regeneration, and ultra sound technology is commonly used to clear clogged arteries and disintegrate kidney stones. Also, it has been known for many years that placing an electrical coil around a fracture that refuses to mend will stimulate bone growth and repair. Brain waves are not confined to the brain, but travel throughout the body via the peri-neural system, the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves. During a Reiki treatment these waves begin as relatively weak pulses in the thalamus of the therapist's brain, and gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body, including the hands. The same effect is mirrored in the person receiving treatment, and it is this process that regulates injury repair and system re-balance. The Subtle Vastness of Internal CoherenceThere is a universe of energy contained within each cell of our body, and in each atom of our chemical make up. Subtle shifts in these energy fields can produce far reaching results in terms of physical health and emotional well being. Physics reveals that through our actions and thoughts, we produce vibrations on a cellular level - thus influencing the outcome of our health on a more gross level and reaching beyond to unlimited space. The quality of one's energy or vibration pattern can be smoothed and enhanced by Reiki, which influences life down to microscopic mass. Small shifts in mass and cellular electromagnetic energy can produce profound change in the healing pattern of our body and mind. All possibilities exist within quantum waves, or small moving particles. The Reiki energy healer has been trained to tap into and accelerate the healing response flow by creating internal coherence. Invisible EnergyReiki is an energy therapy and its purpose is to return the recipient back to a resonant balance. Everything has a vibrational, resonant frequency: increase the vibration and its properties change. Increase the frequency of a sound wave and its pitch increases. Increase the pitch of a light source and its colour changes. Increase the frequency enough and it becomes invisible because we cannot perceive it (i.e. dog whistle, radio waves, UV light, X-rays). In the study of microbiology, the microscope reveals a tiny universe of living, moving, orderly matter: energy invisible to the naked eye. The Interconnectedness of Mind and BodyRegular Reiki treatments appear to enhance psychology as well as physiology, by assisting in homeostasis and coherence. The goal in modern behavioural health is to improve the mental status of the client in a cost effective, expeditious fashion. Good mental health relies on healthy physiology. Many physicians, nurses and behavioural therapists now include complementary therapy such as biofeedback, meditation, acupuncture and Reiki into their treatment plans. Clients have reported better adaptation response to stress and depression, increased mood stability, improved sleeping patterns, decreased anxiety levels, and better coping skills. When the client's body is in balance or homeostasis, emotional blocks are more easily processed. Psychosomatic concerns seem to dissipate more readily, with the addition of Reiki. Using the team approach to include Reiki encourages healthy processing of feelings and greater potential for recovery and emotional healing. Reiki and the Medical ProfessionClients are always advised to contact their physician about conditions which may require medical attention. Reiki is not a substitute or alternative; it works very successfully as a complement to other forms of treatment and a growing number of physicians and nurses practice Reiki.
